Decay

Exhibition at Galleri Thomas Wallner 2018

The exhibition Decay took place in Galleri Thomas Wallner in 2018. The exhibition space is a large space with a vaulted ceiling and concrete floors which makes the acoustics challenging and special. Working with the exhibition this became a point of departure for the pieces in he show.

A piece called Temper, made of three dimensional shapes of canvas should be considered a sound installation at the same time as it is a drawing. Sound moves through spaces and bounces off materials - propagates in and through surrounding matter. Instead of adding additional sounds to an already existing sound environment, this sound piece alters and silences already existing sounds. The shape and material of the piece affect the sound waves in its immediate surroundings by preventing echo and reverberation.

The four drawings in the series titled Amble are based on the impossibility of perfect repetition. Each drawing is drawn the same way but the degree of hardness of the graphite used on each paper varies. The drawing was built up with a grid where each square is 5x5mm. But the manual processof creating the grid causes a variation and the squares never become exactly 5x5 mm. The predetermined rule was then that every other square should be filled with graphite but the repetition in the process affects focus and mistakes occur that make the drawing come alive. In the act of repetition the intention is repeated and the human traces of thought and focus are reinforced.

The Kaalam drawings were created by drawing lines with an acrylic marker over a raw linen canvas. The line became a meditation and a marker of breathing and the passing of time. The Kaalam series is as much a documentation of time as it is a document of the noises, disturbances and encapsulated sounds of existence along a timeline. The traces that arise as a consequence of the conditions and what the material allows become notes/ codes to be interpreted and transformed into another kind of information.
